Andreja

ANDREJA is the second novel I've written (not yet published), initially prompted by my writing group when they responded to a bit-part character I'd invented in my first novel and demanded to know her story. That character became Lidija, Andreja's mother, but it was Andreja who emerged as the hero and protagonist of this story.

As World War II grinds to a chaotic end, Andreja, war widow and Partisan sniper, and her mother, Lidija, a burned-out politician, try to wrest Slovenia away from Yugoslav chairman Tito. When Tito betrays Lidija to the Gestapo, Andreja must decide whether to risk everything -- her son, her father, a new love, Slovenia -- to rescue her.

In the Mouth of the Wolf

This was my first novel (not yet published), loosely based on the lives of my grandfather Umberto and his brother Amedeo.

At the end of World War II, when the brothers are in their 50s, Yugoslav Partisans take over the city from the retreating Germans.  A wave of revenge killings surges through Trieste.  When Umberto becomes a target, Amedeo finds himself in a position to save him.  There are two big problems:  Umberto has refused to speak to Amedeo for 20 years, and just making the attempt could cost Amedeo his life.
